The 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is entering the quarter final phase and with over 10 games remaining as at July 8, 2019, some records have already been made.
2019's African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is the first one to have had 24 countries competing among themselves so that in itself is historic.
However, more than a few records have been made and it is important to educate ourselves on this. AFCON is one of the biggest world football showpieces, accruing some rich history in its previous 31 editions.
YEN.com.gh some of the records made so far at Egypt 2019.
1. Host nation and defending champions failures
This AFCON is the first one ever in which a host nation and a defending champion have failed to reach the quarter finals of the competition.
Due to the expanded number of competing countries, the immediate after-group phase is now the round of 16, as opposed to quarter finals in the former years.
Host nation Egypt and tournament defenders Cameroon, have already been kicked out.
2. Benin quarter finals magic
Benin have not yet won a game in regulation time yet they will play in the quarter finals ahead of more established countries such as Egypt, Cameroon, Morocco and DR Congo.
Benin's four regulation time draws, among which includes a penalty shoot-out victory against Morocco, have somehow been enough to give the lowly West African nation a quarters berth.
This has never been done since the tournament was increased to more than eight teams in 1968.
3. Asamoah Gyan joins an elite club
Until 2019, Only Cameroonian Rigobert Song and Egyptian Ahmed Hassan have played in more AFCONs than Ghana's Asamoah Gyan.
The Ghanaian has however equalled the feat set by his more illustrious African counterparts.
They are more illustrious because Gyan is the only one to have played in more AFCONs without actually winning the tournament.
4. Egypt is the home of the AFCON
Yes, the Pharaohs of Egypt have won the tournament a record seven times, two more than Cameroon and three more than Ghana.
But another record that was set with AFCON 2019 is that Egypt played as hosts for the fifth time, hosting the tournament more times than any nation in Africa.
5. Three countries go home after good defending
Three countries, namely, Cameroon, Morocco and Egypt, played the entirety of the group stage without a conceding a single goal. To have that many countries do that an AFCON was historic.
But in a bizarre turn of events, all three countries were eliminated in the second round of the tournament.
6. Egypt and Ghana show up more than anyone else
2019 was the 24th time Egypt played at the AFCON and it was Ghana's 21st. No other side has been there even 18 times.
