- A group of Kumawood stars and industry players have petitioned parliament over a proposed film village
- Government has hinted of plans to build a film village in the Eastern region
- However, the group led by actress Nana Ama McBrown believe the village will serve a better purpose if built in the Ashanti region
Star actress Nana Ama McBrown has led her colleagues from the Kumawood movie industry to petition parliament over a proposed film village in the Eastern region.
The group comprising of actors, actresses, producers, and other stakeholders are seeking to have a Film Village built in Kumasi, which is regarded as the hub of the Ghanaian movie industry.
Presenting the petition to the Majority Leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu at the parliament house in Accra on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, McBrown stated that the Kumawood movie industry contributes immensely to the socio-economic wellbeing of Ghanaians.
“We play a very critical role in the movie industry in Ghana. We have employed more Ghanaians as part of our business,” she said.
Adding that: “for this reason, we are petitioning Parliament to ensure that the Film Village is set up in the Ashanti Region.”
Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, after receiving the petition on behalf of the leadership of parliament assured the petitioners that their concerns would be forwarded to the Speaker of Parliament.
The petition as a result of parts of the 2019 budget statement which indicated that government "has acquired 200 acres of land in the Eastern Region to build a film village.”
While the idea of a film village is welcome news to many industry players, the Eastern region location has been deemed in some circles as inappropriate.
Protests from the Kumawood circles over the film village started in April 2019 with some filmmakers like Samuel Nyamekye of Miracle Films and others stating their readiness to go on a protest march if the did not bring the film village to the Ashanti Region.
The petition forms part of the group's attempt to get government to change its decision.
Meanwhile, McBrown was recently dazzled fans with her knowledge of German language as she hosted Wendy Shay on the McBrown's Kitchen cooking show.
