Tanko Muhammad: Termites ate my primary school certificate - CJN

The new chief justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad, has said that his primary school leaving certificate was destroyed by termites.

Muhammad made the claim in an affidavit which he submitted to the Senate last week to be confirmed as the head of the Supreme Court, Premium Times reports.

YEN.com.gh gathers that the top jurist said that the termites invaded his home in Bauchi state in 1998 and devoured all documents inside beyond recovery.

The affidavit that was sworn by Muhammad on February 13, 2002, has been circulating on social media since Monday night, July 22.

He was said to have sworn the affidavit when he was a judge at the Jos division of the Court of Appeal.

The affidavit read in part: "That on the 15th day of March, 1998, termites, had in my village, Doguwa/Ginde, destroyed a lot of books, publications and other documents including my first school leaving certificate which was issued to me by the then Katagum/Jama'are local education authority.

He said: “That no portion of the certificate was salvaged."

Recall that the nomination of Justice Muhammad Tanko as Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) was on Wednesday, July 17, confirmed by the Senate at the National Assembly.

Mohammad is officially the 18th CJN. This was confirmed after a brief swearing-in ceremony conducted in Abuja for him.

This came following the letter sent by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Senate on Thursday, July 11, requesting for the confirmation of Justice Tanko Muhammad as Nigeria's CJN.

The letter read by Senate president Ahmad Lawan during the plenary revealed the request came on the heels of the recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on behalf of Muhammad.
