- The passage of the Bill will transform the existing campus of University of Development Studies (UDS) campus in Wa into a fully-fledged university
The Majority in Parliament has pushed through with a proposal to change the names of the Wa and Navrongo campuses of University of Development Studies (UDS).
The two campuses were recently made autonomous through an Executive Instrument.
Known previously as the the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, the Wa campus been renamed ‘Simon Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies’.
While the Majority in Parliament consented to the bill on the name change, the Minority abstained.
The bill was pushed through by the Majority while the Minority excused themselves.
Simon Diedong Dombo was a member of the United Party (UP) tradition, which birthed the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He was a renowned politician who also served as a Member of Parliament and the Parliamentary Leader during Ghana’s First Republic.
He was also a king – as Douri-Na, he was reputed to be the first educated chieftain in the Upper Region of Ghana.
Simon Diedong Dombo was Minister for Health and then Minister for Interior in the Busia government.
He was also one of the founders of the Northern People's Party that subsequently merged with the United Party.
