Europe’s football governing body, UEFA announced the three finalists for the 2018-19 player of the year award on Thursday, August 15.
According to a report on UEFA’s official Twitter handle, the trio of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk will battle for the Men's player of the year award with last season’s winner Luka Modric missing.
The report further revealed that the winner will be named alongside Women's player of the Year and Champions League positional award winners – during the group stage draw scheduled for Monaco, on Thursday, August 29.
The UEFA Europa League player of the season will be disclosed the next day.
A further breakdown below revealed some of the performances of the three finalists during the season.
The Argentine, who doubles as Barcelona captain claimed both the top goalscorer in the Champions League, and the European Golden Shoe as he won his tenth La Liga title with the Catalan giants.
The forward star emerged the UEFA Nations League winner with Portugal alongside the top goalscorer prize.
Ronaldo also scooped his first Serie A silverware in his debut campaign bin the Italian topflight.
The Portuguese star Ronaldo has won this award on three times – more than other nominees.
Virgil van Dijk:
The Dutchman won final man of the match for the Champions League last season with Liverpool.
The cenre-back also reached the UEFA Nations League final with Holland before losing to Portugal in the final.
