- The CEO of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distribution, Mr Senyo Hosi has described Ghana’s premier university, University of Ghana as a “school of mediocrity”
- Mr Hosi's rant has generated public debate with people, especially from the university community disagreeing with his assertions
- YEN.com.gh presents Yaw Gyampo's response to Senyo Hosi's assertions about the University of Ghana
Businessman, Senyo Hosi, has been in the news following his recent tirade against the University of Ghana (UG).
Speaking at the university, he said the management and lecturers of the institution are “are not thinking.”
He further stated that things need to change at UG, insisting the institution is currently churning out people with degrees and not people with an education.
The entrepreneur stressed that he will not hire MBA graduates from UG because they lack relevant skills.
Mr. Hosi, who is an alumni of the University, also hit out at the “old men” running the school, saying all of them needed to be booted out.
“Respectfully, the old men running this school, they are too many. Get them out! I beg you, you guys are not doing anything that is relevant for the future,” he added.
He further expressed shock that despite a Marketing Department and a Communication School, the organisation of the university’s anniversary celebration was poor.
There have been numerous arguments and counter-arguments following Mr. Hosi’s outbursts. Below are views of Yaw Gyampo.
However, the CEO of Bulk Oil Distributors made a lot of exaggerated statements which do not reflect reality.
To begin with, how could he complain about the poor attendance when he was part of the alumni selected to help boost attendance of the event?
As an Alumni Homecoming Ambassador, he is as responsible as anyone else in projecting the event in order to get people to attend.
So, if Mr. Hosi says UG failed in this aspect and wants to push the blame on them, then he is equally culpable.
Again, he laid into the management of UG, describing them as old men who do not think. So the question goes: How did a university with people who do not think churn out a “deep thinker” like him, Hr. Hosi?
This is a man who has three degrees from UG. If really the university was full of non-thinkers, would he have returned after his first degree?
Also, he claimed UG churns out students who lack skill, but the records prove that many graduates from the school have gone on to achieve greater things.
In fact, we have seen many students from UG receive scholarships from the best schools in the world to pursue postgraduate studies and are employed afterwards.
If he, Mr. Hosi, a product of UG, is good enough to be hired locally, how then does he think others who have the same education aren’t fit for local jobs?
From the above, it is obvious that Mr. Hosi made a lot of blanket statements and the majority of his attacks on UG were baseless.
