Banker narrates how he funded political career easily in Ghana with “dirty money”

- 60-year-old UK-based Ghanaian banker has made some shocking revelations

Former Goldman Sachs banker, Ellias Preko, who has been ordered by a UK court to pay back £7,3million or face 10 years jail term has said he used a chunk of the money to fund his political career on the ticket of the NPP.

Representing himself, he told the court in a previous hearing that, much of the cash he has been asked to pay back had been spent on election campaigning back in Ghana.

The 60-year-old Ghanaian said he had run as a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) back in the mid-2000s.

According to DailyMail reports, Preko explained to the court that Ghana is predominantly a cash-based society therefore making it hard for him to get receipts from his campaign spending.

“Most of the expenses are not receipted. Ghanaian political activities are not financed by the state,” he added.

Preko is believed to have used his expertise and experience to flush the dirty money out of Nigeria.

He was jailed for four and a half years back in 2013 for his role in a fraudulent scheme.

In other news, the Deputy Foreign Affairs minister Charles Owiredu has revealed that no Ghanaian has so far been attacked in the xenophobic issues in South Africa.

He noted there were no reports of Ghanaian-owned shops or interests that have been attacked.

Speaking to in an interview on the Morning Starr, the deputy minister said Ghana is keenly monitoring the development in order to effectively protect its citizens.
