Robert Mugabe's death sparks reaction online: Rest in peace Uncle Bob

- Former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe passed away at the age of 95

- Uncle Bob reportedly died in a Singapore hospital after struggling with his health for a while

- The news sparked a massive reaction on social media and the world was left divided

Liberator and oppressor - those were some of the words to describe the late Robert Mugabe on social media following reports of his death.

Twitter streets blew up with posts under #Mugabe and #RIPMugabe, however, Briefly.co.za gathered social media users were left divided on his passing.

We decided to take a look at some of the reactions Mugabe's death gathered on social media.

The African National Congress (ANC) posted a lengthy response to the passing of Robert Mugabe, writing that it mourns the passing of a "friend, statesman and revolutionary comrade".

Many expressed their deep condolences over the late African leader's death, adding that despite his faults, he was still a revolutionary man.

Twitter user, @pietrampedi, commented: "It's sad to learn of the death of President Robert #Mugabe, one of the greatest leaders and African revolutionaries of our time. We'll miss his astute, fearless and decisive leadership on the global stage and land. The African agenda has been set 20 years back."

However, there were those who wondered why people were only seeing the good in Mugabe now that he has passed.

Some social media users said he was a dictator who ruined his country's economy and let his people live in poverty.

Twitter user, @simphi4, commented: "He could afford to get his healthcare in Singapore his people are dirt poor.... good riddance!!!"
