Fact check: MTN shutting down mobile money service is false

- Following reprisal attacks in Nigeria and South Africa, it was reported that MTN mobile money service was going to be shut down

In the face of recent xenophobic attacks where South African nationals were reported to be attacking foreigners in their country, they have come under social media criticisms.

As part of anger vented in direction to their unwarranted attacks on foreigners, it was reported that mobile telecommunications company, MTN, which reportedly belongs to South Africa was shutting down its mobile money services in Ghana.

This was feared because the MTN offices in certain parts of Nigeria and South Africa were destroyed and looted by angry protestors, following reprisal attacks.

The report which which was spread wide across the length and breadth of the country has been described by MTN Ghana as false.

According to MTN, the rumours of shutting down its Mobile Money (MoMo) service in Ghana was not possible as it is incapable of doing so per its regulatory and contractual agreements.

“MTN MoMo is not a centralized service being operated at the MTN Group level. Customers’ funds are safely lodged with our 18 partner banks in Ghana,” a statement from the company said.

In other news, South Africa had been the subject of outrage across the country following the wave of xenophobic attacks in the country.

Some citizens of the country have gone on rampage, destroying and looting properties belonging to other African nationals.
