President Akufo-Addo has stated that he does not need the help of the Electoral Commission (EC) to win the 2020 election.
He said he wants to retain power because it is the people’s will, and not because the EC provided a helping hand.
The President said this when some officials of the EC paid him a visit at the Jubilee House on Thursday, September 12, 2019.
Led by its Chairperson, the Commission paid a courtesy call on the President, as part of a series of consultative meetings being held with stakeholders of the electioneering process.
“I said it to you before, and I will repeat it. I don’t need the Electoral Commission to win an election; I don’t want to win an election in Ghana because of the Electoral Commission,” Nana Addo said.
Nana Addo noted that he wants to remain in power because majority of the populace want him to and and not because he was aided to by the EC.
According to him, for a fair democracy, the ballot should present an unvarnished verdict of the will of the Ghanaian people.
He said, “if there is any interference with that, it is a distortion of the popular will, and, that, therefore, means that the democracy that you seek to advance itself becomes questionable.”
On her part, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, said the Commission is will ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
