Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool centre-back, is currently the best defender in Europe after his exploits in the Premier League and in the Champions League last campaign.

At the last count, the Dutchman has been on a winning run claiming the UEFA Player of the Year gong this September, along with the UEFA Super Cup in August.

Van Dijk is also in the running for FIFA's The Best Men's Player of the Year prize.

With various awards in the bag in the 18 months, football buffs were already tipping the Liverpool star as all-time best defender in the English Premier League.

However, in the quest to find the greatest defender on Sky Sports, Van Dijk failed to get past Nemanja Vidic despite seeing off tough oppositions to reach the final.

Vincent Kompany sent Jaap Stam parking in the first round, Van Dijk pipped Tony Adams, Vidic had a tough task to keep John Terry out as Rio Ferdinand survived Sol Campbell’s threat.

In the semi-final rounds, Van Dijk sent Vincent parking, even though the ex-Man City captain had the privilege of lifting the Premier League four times.

Two former defence partners battled hard in the second as Ferdinand was knockout by Vidic to reach the final.

During the final showdown, Vidic, who claimed five league titles and the Champions League with Man United beat all-comers to emerge Premier League all-time best defender.

The 28-year-old Van Dijk ended up in the second spot behind hard-tackling Vidic.

YEN.com.gh reported earlier that Jose Mourinho is unarguable one of the best managers in club football with his exploits with FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The Portuguese born is one of the few tacticians who have won treble after leading Italian League giants Inter Milan to their most successful campaign in 2010.
