Martha Bissah named Female Athlete of the Year for second consecutive time at US college

Ghanaian athlete Martha Bissah, has been named the Female Athlete of the Year at the Norfolk State University in the United States (US).

This is the second year in a row that the 20-year-old athlete has scooped such an award at the US College.

Last October, Martha became the first student there to win the US’ Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women’s cross country individual title since 2001.

In clocking a time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds, the young athlete set a new championship record.

In February, she won four gold medals at the MEAC Indoor meet, emerging winner in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter races.

She also won gold as part of the school’s first-place distance medley relay team and was subsequently named the MEAC Indoor Most Outstanding Women’s Runner of the year.

Martha follows in the footsteps of bowler Thea Aspiras, who also won NSU’s Female Athlete of the Year award twice in 2011 and 2012.

The Ghanaian has had a splendid year and is currently ranked 10th in the NCAA East Region in the 800 meters.

Martha is one of Ghana’s brightest prospects in athletics, having won gold in the 800-meter race during the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Ghana Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey has joined three other investors to purchase Alcobendas, a third division Spanish club.

According to the report, the Atlectico Madrid midfielder has bought the club to help them get promoted.
