An emotional video sighted by YEN.com.gh on JoyNews indicates how a man infected a student with HIV when she needed money to resit her West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Using the psuedo name, Akosua, a young lady has recounted how a man agreed to give her double the amount of money she needed for an exam, only if she spent a night with him.
Unfortunately for the 20-year-old SHS graduate, she contracted the HIV after she had unprotected sex with the man who promised to pay for her exam fees.
Narrating her ordeal in a JoyNews Hotline Documentary, Akosua said:“Later on, he invited me to his house. I went to his house. I did not know what came and we had sexual intercourse.”
According to Akosua, she had earlier tested negative when an NGO visited her school to give a lecture on HIV and tested them afterwards.
After her parents' initial struggles to pay her exams fees, she did not see the need to go back to ask them for money to rewrite her papers so she started her own 'indomie' business hoping to make the money.
It was through the business that she met a 40-year-old man who agreed to help her but she was oblivious to the fact that he would have sex with her after inviting her to his house.
He said the way I was hard working, he wanted to help me. He gave me the money to go and register and later on invited me to his house. I did not know what came and we had sexual intercourse.”
Akosua said she started falling sick here and there but her frequent visits to the hospital revealed that she was alright until she took the initiative to take the test again and realised she had the virus
“I went to take the test and it was HIV1 positive and HIV2 negative. At first, I wanted to die. I can’t sleep at night. I will be crying for the whole day", she added
