Explainer: How 'coup plotters' planned to kidnap Akufo-Addo

Ghanaians where shocked and stunned when Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, revealed on Friday, September 20, 2019, that state security agencies have thwarted an attempt by some persons to destabilise Ghana.

According to the minister, the security personnel retrieved explosive devices, ammunition and other arms at the hideout of the alleged coup plotters in Alajo and Bawaleshie in Accra and Dodowa respectively.

The government further revealed that the security agencies had been observing the activities of the persons involved for well over 15 months prior to their arrest.

So far, the police have arrested three civilians and six soldiers for their involvement in the plot to destabilise Ghana’s peace.

Dr Mac-Palm, together with two others; Ezor Kafui and Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, were the first persons to be arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on September 20.

On Monday, September 30, 2019, six soldiers were also picked up for their alleged connection with the plot to overthrow the government.

The names of the surviving military officers were given as Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Seidu Abubakar, Albert Baba Ibrahim, Godwin Nii Ankrah, Sylvester Kpebu, and a lady identified only as WO2 Esther.

The suspects have all been charged with possession of explosives, arms and ammunition without lawful authority.

The latest development to alleged coup plot was revealed by ace investigative journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako on Joy FM, Saturday, September 28.

The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper said the ‘coup plotter’ intended to kidnap President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as well as other top government officials.

Mr Baako said he had watched a video recording and listened to tapes of the suspects manufacturing the weapons and talking about how they were going to carry out the heinous crime.

There were scenes where they even contemplated the kidnapping of the President, and this is video, it will come out in court. They contemplated a situation the kidnapping of the President, the Vice President, Chief of Defence Staff and some other top shots have congregated at a place to explode that thing they were doing (you see the guy manufacturing) with the doctor present, this is video,” he made known.

And they talk of exploding this thing with needles coming out and then also some chemicals that will make you go off. They contemplate that, these are things that were discussing and you see the manufacturing in action,” he added.
