The Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Ahenkorah, has revealed how reliant Ghana is on it's neighboring country, Nigeria.

According to him, when it comes to trade and other economic balances, Ghana needs Nigeria more than Nigeria needs Ghana in that field.

Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express show, Carlos Ahenkorah said a country such as Nigeria cannot be bluffed inasmuch as they are a better recipient of our products therefore putting in place counter-measures against Nigeria would not be the best solution to solving the border closure.

“The best way to solve this problem is not to pay Nigeria back or have some countermeasure, but coach them into understanding that look, hey we are all losing, and we need you, we need each other. But I can tell you without blinking an eye that economically, trade wise, we need Nigeria more than they need us,” he said.

Several African countries have expressed their displeasure and disappointment in the Nigerian government following the country’s border closure.

Among them is the government of Ghana as well as its trade unions who are calling on the ECOWAS committee to intervene.

In other news, the closure of the Nigeria border continues to affect businesses, especially Ghanaian-owned ones operating internationally.

Indigenous Ghanaian beverage company, Kasapreko Company Limited, is one of such businesses.

The Alomo Bitters manufacturer said it has lost about $2 million in revenue due to the closure of the border by the Nigerian government.

Francis Adzah of Kasapreko said the company has been hit severely by the action of the Federal Government of Nigeria to close borders with neighbouring countries.
