John Witherspoon, the legendary American actor and comedian, has passed away at the age of 77, his family has confirmed.

According to a statement from the family, Witherspoon died at his home in Sherman Oaks on Tuesday, October 29, 2019.

The 77-year-old was survived by his wife and two sons, JD and Alexander

“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77,” Witherspoon’s family said in a statement to Deadline.

“He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was huge deal to us,” the family's statement published on Deadline.com read.

Witherspoon started his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s. He later branched into acting in the 1980s and featured in a number of popular films.

His collection included Friday, Boomerang, Hollywood Shuffle, Soul Plane, among others. He voiced grandpa Frobert Freeman in the Boondocks animated series.
