In 1947, Princess Elizabeth was heir to the British throne and arrangements were being finalised for her to marry her prince.

On 20 November 1947, the big day arrived and she married Prince Philip Mountbatten at London's Westminster Abbey.

A testament to their staying power and loyalty is that today marks their 72nd wedding anniversary.

The royal family is a sacred entity to many Brits and so this day marks a very important day in the United Kingdom calendar.

ABC News shared historic footage of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh's wedding celebration.

YEN.com.gh noted that their tweet went viral as thousands reacted to the news.

MellyMed (@mel_med_larson) took a pessimistic approach to the news:

"47 years of marriage. I love the Royals, but 47 years of marriage is what happens when you don’t have to worry about money and someone else raises your kids. Oh and when you’re away from each other for big chunks of time."

Lawrence Yonge (@lawrenceyonge) touched on the dark history:

"The crown was brutal in its efforts on colonisation and slavery. In the name of spreading civility, Barbaric they became."

JustCallMeMavis (@AuntMadges) couldn't contain her excitement:

"That’s what marriage is about, fighting through the bad times and still come out stronger! God save our queen & Prince Philip."
