Ruiz Jr, a total underdog with a chubby physique, knocked out Joshua in the seventh to strip him of his WBA, IBF, WBO titles in June 2019.
During the fight, Joshua knocked down Ruiz in the round but he recovered well enough cause one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history, knocking down Joshua four times.
While Joshua claimed Ruiz beat him with a “lucky punch sent from the Gods,” the reigning champion has hit back.
According to the Mexican American, it was Joshua who got a lucky punch because he (Ruiz) was not hurt when Joshua dropped him in the third round.
“That was a lucky shot for him, too. I got lazy. It was a punch in the blink of an eye. I thought: ‘What just happened?’", Ruiz told Sky Sports.
Speaking ina recent interview, Ruiz noted: "I wasn’t that hurt because I wasn’t wobbling. I still had the will and the fire inside of me. I wanted to keep fighting and win the fight."
“Once he dropped me, then got me with a really good right hand, I could eat his punches. Mentally he thought, ‘This guy isn’t going down, what is happening?”, he added.
For Ruiz, he was the better fighter on the night and di not win by luck.
“The left hook was a really great shot in the temple. The other times I hit him in the head, he loosened up and got wobbly. I was the better fighter that day because I pressured him, threw more punches and the body shots put him down,” he stated.
The two are set to fight in a rematch on December 7, 2019,at Diriyah Arena in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, in a bout dubbed the "Clash on the Dunes"
