The violent rainstorm also destroyed cash at the Barclays Bank branch in the area.
The rains destroyed buildings including a storey building housing Barclays Bank, Yilo Stars Micro Finance company and a lot of houses had their roofs ripped off.
Meanwhile, the GCB Bank branch in Somanya was also mildly affected.
According to a Starr Fm report, staff of the affected banks had to run for their lives and to safety as the rainwater soaked huge sum of deposits collected.
A resident who spoke to the radio station said the rain which lasted for about 30 minutes caused severe havoc and destruction.
He said many trees have been toppled, while schools, polyclinics and police station have all been affected.
“It [rain] also also destroyed part of the GCB bank Ltd. Just the opposite and adjacent the destroyed buildings. This brought heavy traffic to the Somanya township that the presence of the Ghana Police Service was called to control”.
Officials of Ghana National Fire Service, the police and National Disaster Management Organization have embarked on a joint rescue and salvage operations to ensure there is no casualty.
The Yilo Krobo Deputy District Director of National Disaster Management Organization , Bismark Angmor, described the incident as devastating but assured the situation was under control.
YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Minister of Railway and Development, Joe Ghartey’s pistol has been stolen in his hotel room in the Ashanti Region.
The minister and his bodyguard have since made a report to the police about the matter.
