Teachers ready to go on strike; demand salaries from 2012 to 2016

- Three associations composed of teachers have vowed to embark on a strike on Monday, December 9, 2019

- They are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH)

- They have given the government till Thursday, December 5, 2019, to settle all their arrears

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH), have declared their intention of going on strike.

The groups stated collectively stated that there has been a continuous row over salaries which has yielded little results.

The decision comes as students prepare for their end of term examinations which come just ahead of the Christmas season.

The three groups revealed that attempts to get arrears owed them between 2012 and 2016 have yielded no results.

They added that their decision follows a series of meetings with government agencies such as the Ghana Education Service (GES), ministry of employment and labour relations and the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) in a bid to demand the payment of their monies.

Per a report by dailymailgh.com, they indicated that checks have revealed arrears have been verified and approved for payment.

It was however handed over to the GES which subsequently claimed there were discrepancies and it has therefore held on to it.

The group indicated that it has given the authorities up to Thursday, December 5, 2019, to settle all arrears else it will begin the strike on Monday, December 9, 2019.

In other news, former Manchester United player, Memphis Depay has been spotted in a video showing lovely dancing skills in Ghana.

In a video that has since gone viral, the footballer, who currently captains Lyon, a French club, is seen dancing with some students somewhere in Ghana.

Wearing a beautiful kaftan and with support from national teammate Leroy Fer, Depay teaches the children how to move one’s body in sync with the beat of the song.
