Ballon d'Or winner Messi reveals why he voted for Sadio Mane instead of himself

- Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has revealed that he voted for Liverpool striker Sadio Mane during the just-ended Ballon d'Or awards

- According to Messi who won the prestigious award, he likes the manner in which Mane plays, triggering him to vote for the Senegalese forward

- The Argentine forward expressed his disappointment in the fact that Mane placed fourth behind Van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo

Award-winning Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi has disclosed the reason why he voted for Senegal and Liverpool forward Sadio Mane to win the Ballon d'Or award.

According to the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, he voted for Sadio Mane instead of himself because he admires Mane's style of play.

In an interview with Canal +, Messi expressed admiration and support for Sadio Mane who placed fourth in the award scheme.

"Mane achieved a great year that was exceptional for the entire Liverpool team. That’s why I chose him," Messi revealed.

"It’s a shame to see Mane finish in fourth place but I think there have been a lot of great players this year," he added.

Messi admitted that the choice for this year's Ballon d'Or was so difficult because there were a lot of great places in the competition.

"It was difficult to choose a particular player. But I chose Sadio Mane because he’s a player that I like," Messi disclosed.

Sadio Mane scored very crucial goals for Liverpool, enabling them to win the Champion League trophy.

The Senegalese forward is somewhat a talisman for the English side, performing tremendously in the Premier League as well, as the team placed second behind Manchester City.

For about four consecutive seasons now, Mane has proven to be the best striker in the world and the best player in Africa.

Meanwhile, Messi has won his sixth Ballon d'Or title, moving ahead of his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo who won five.

Many fans tipped Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk to win the top award but the votes did not go his way as Messi won and he placed second.
