District assembly elections: Akufo-Addo and wife vote; but slow enthusiasm

President Nana Akufo-Addo and wife Rebecca have cast their votes in the ongoing District Assembly and Unit Committee elections at the Rock of Ages polling station 'B', in Kyebi.

Polls opened on Tuesday, December 17 at 7am across all 6,700 electoral areas in Ghana.

The president and his wife showed up to vote in fulfillment of their civic duties. Nana Addo also urged all Ghanaians to participate in the elections.

But reports coming in from across the country indicate that voter turnout has been low.

According to the Electoral Commission, a total of 57,030 candidates are contesting to be elected across the country.

Out of the figure, 18,519 are vying to become assembly members, while 38,520 want to be in the Unit Committee members.

Police say they have deployed some 48,000 personnel to ensure a smooth run of today’s exercise.

Voting officially closes at 5:00 pm.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that a former chief of defence staff under the PNDC, General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah says former president Jerry John Rawlings did not know about the killing of the three High Court judges and the ex-soldier abducted during the era of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

A former national security advisor opined that people know the truth about who killed the four people, but they don’t have the courage to speak the truth.
