Christmas is already here and many have stashed gifts for loved ones somewhere in their homes and under Christmas trees, but it’s only reasonable you’d want to keep your family, house and the valuables safe from thieves.
Burglary cases often increase during festive seasons and it is important that people take measures to keep themselves safe.
YEN.com.gh highlights some safety mistakes and some security measures you can apply to keep criminal from having access to your homes or valuables.
1: If your house is going to be vacant for a while, consider investing in a smart-lighting home automation systems where you can set different rooms to turn on and off lights at different points in the day.
You can set it up in the kitchen during dinner time and the bedrooms at night.
2: Perhaps you got yourself a new TV set to enjoy all your favourite movies this Christmas. To be safe, break down the box it came in and don’t just leave it by your garbage bin.
Boxes of new items in the thrash only tells a a burglar with experience that you just got something valuable worth stealing.
3: Don’t keep all your expensive jewelleries in small boxes because thieves know people usually have all their main valuables in it.
And don’t underestimate the importance of keeping your shed locked even if your house is locked, because burglars have access to several tools they can use to gain access.
Don’t help the burglar. Lock your house and don’t store a spare key near the front door.
4: When you are going on vacation or going to be away from home for a very long time, you may want to throw the mind off a thief off your most treasured items by placing one or two at not too easy to find but can be found when they come looking. When it’s too easy to find they know there are more.
5: Figure out how you would break into your own house, as it will show you where you’re vulnerable to thieves. It’s a very helpful exercise to test your security.
