According to CGTN Africa, the German star was able to fund the medical expenses through the BigShoe project.

The publication further stated that Rudiger's mother hailed from Sierra Leone, hence, the defender needed no motivation to pay a tribute to his Africa roots.

He, however, said that he was delighted to have been able to give back to the country.

Proud of my origins in Sierra Leone…and happy to give something back together with the team of BigShoe we could make it possible again to help 11 children in need with surgeries.

Rudiger added: "They were suffering from cleft lips, burns, and deformations.”

Last week I got the message from the medical team that everything went fine – thanks a lot for the amazing support to Dr. Jürgen Arndt and the interplast team again. And one more time all the best to the kids & their families,” Rudiger wrote on Twitter.

The defender is one of the players to have joined the BigShoe project a worldwide growing network of football and sports fans, helping poor children with, among other things, life-changing medical operations.

Other notable footballers to be part of the project are German Philipp Lahm and France’s World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Chelsea vs Southampton ended in a 2-0 win in favour of the Saints as they continue their impressive form away from home.

The away side got their goals in each half of the game through Nigerian-born Irish striker Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond.

Frank Lampard's men were on the backdrop of an impressive victory in the past weekend against Tottenham but could not replicate their form against the Saints.
