Remarkable photo of Rawlings in his military attire after foiling a coup d’etat

Former president Jerry John Rawlings came to power through a coup d’etat in 1981 after overthrowing a civilian government.

At age 35, JJ Rawlings captured power to rule Ghana but he also faced about four coup attempts to overthrow him.

With barely 48 hours to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, a rare photo of Jerry Rawlings leading other soldiers to foil an attempted coup against his government has popped up.

The photo showed JJ Rawlings and Captain Quashigah after the successive crushing of an attempted coup d’etat, June, 1983.

In June 1983, Ghana's borders were closed and curfew hours extended by the head of state, Flight Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.

Meanwhile, the 31st December Revolution will be held this year in Winneba.

The event will be attended by chiefs and people of the Winneba area and leading cadres including the architect of the revolution, former president Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings as speakers.

Other speakers lined up for the commemoration include former president, John Dramani Mahama, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia and Local Organizing Committee Chairman, Mike Hammah.

The 31st December Revolution gave birth to the National Democratic Congress which won elections in 1992 and 1996 under the leadership of Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Government of Ghana has revealed that plans are far advanced to join the eight West African countries which have committed to using the common currency, the ECO from 2020.

Government, in a statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin, also applauded the countries which have committed to using, a common currency, saying the move will boost integration and free trade in the sub-region.
