Senegal and Liverpool forward Sadio Mane won his first-ever Africa best player award earlier this week in Egypt.

The 27-year-old beat teammate Mohamed Salah and Manchester City attacker Riyad Mahrez to clinch the prestigious prize - having finished runners up in the last couple of editions.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba after the announcement congratulated the Mane, labeling him the new king of African football.

The former Southampton star contributed to the success of his side at the end of the 2018-19 season - as they won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Drogba said: “To the new king of Africa.”

He has scored eleven goals and registered six assists in 19 Premier League appearances so far this campaign but his chances of winning the golden shoe in the league again this term are slim.

Mane will be hoping he can win the title again, just like the Chelsea legend who clinched the prize in 2006 and 2009.

Meanwhile, Liverpool forward, while reacting to his triumph said he preferred playing than speaking.

To be honest, I would love it more to play football than speak,” Mane said. “Football is my job and I love it. “But speaking is not.”

He added: “I’m really proud to receive this award,” the forward adds. “It’s a big day for me. I’ve come a long way, from a small village.”

Mane emerged winner having polled 477 votes beating Salah by 152 points who had 325 votes while Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez finished third with 267 votes.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Senegalese striker Sadio Mane has been named as African's best footballer of the year for 2019 beating Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez for the award.

The Liverpool forward finished behind Mohamed Salah in 2017 and 2018 and also finished third in 2016 before winning the 2019 edition thanks to his superb performances for his club.

Last season in the Premier League, Mane finished among the three highest goal scorers and also won the Champions League title with Liverpool.
