- Valverde was replaced with former Real Betis manager Quique Setien
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has exhibited some class after sending a hearty message to his former manager Ernesto Valverde.
Valverde was sacked on Monday, January 13, with the club’s season hanging in the balance by their own lofty standards.
Messi and Valverde did not necessarily enjoy the best of relationships, with cheeky fans suggesting the 32-year old had previously saved his coach’s job on numerous occasions with his performances on the pitch.
Regardless, the six-time Ballon’ D or winner could afford a decent message to his outgoing manager, with whom they won four trophies together.
Messi took to Instagram to thank Valverde for the time with the club as he wished him luck in future.
“Thanks for everything, mister. I'm sure you'll do really well wherever you go because, as well as being an excellent professional, you're a great person. Good luck and a big hug,” Messi said on social media.
The move typically earned him applause from fans who took it as a touch of class from a player considered the greatest of all time.
Valverde was replaced by 61-year old former Real Betis coach Quique Setién, who is famous for staging an unexpected win against the Catalan giants at the Nou Camp.
Earlier, YEN.com.gh had reported how Lionel Messi reportedly threatened to leave Barcelona should the club fail to bring an alternative solution to the recent crisis bedeviling it.
The Argentine hitman has been a messianic figure for the Catalans since the beginning of the campaign but was unable to replicate his brilliance as Barcelona were disgracefully outsmarted by Espanyol.
