After serving some time in prison owing to a 10-year jail sentence, 100-year-old Akolobila has finally been released after an NGO campaigned to have him set free.

Akolobila was first handed a sentence of 10 years to serve at the Kumasi Central Prison after he was arrested by the police for possessing narcotics.

Prior to that untimely and unexpected fate, the 100-year-old man worked as caretaker of a large farm before being laid off due to old age which affected his ability to deliver maximum output.

Akolobila lost his livelihood and at that age he could hardly get another job to fend for himself.

He had to depend on handouts from loved ones and on one man who gave him money for food.

However, the man who often supported Akolobila out of kindness ‘demanded’ that he earned his own money by selling ‘wee’.

The old man agreed and on his first day of starting business, he was apprehended by the police and subsequently handed a 10-year jail sentence.

Akolobila, who suffers from health problems including asthma is also in a wheelchair.

Through the intense advocacy of Crime Check Foundation, Akolobila has been released from jail after serving some time in prison.

The foundation earlier paid him a visit while in jail to donate some food items and other salient packages to enable him cater for himself.

A recent video online indicates that 100-year-old Akolobila has been released from jail after a successful campaign.

The old man was granted a presidential pardon.

''OUR COUNTRY'S LAWS ON NARCOTICS NEED TO CHANGE. WHAT IS THE SENSE IN KEEPING A 100 YR OLD WEAK AND SICK PRISONER IN JAIL? THANK GOD OUR ADVOCACY HAS LED TO HIS RELEASE,'' Crime Check Foundation wrote on Facebook.
