A historic footage has emerged of the grand opening of the Ghana International Trade Fair in 1967, a remarkable programme initiated by Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The video shows a much cleaner trade fair site with many stores and products from both local and international companies on exhibition.
The fair at the site took place from 1-9 of February 1967.
Among some of the local companies which featured was the Ghana National Trading Corporation (GNPC) which managed trading and commerce in the country at the time.
Also present was the State Paint Corporation stand which was stationed at the fair to exhibit and market locally produced paint.
Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah established the trade fair center in 1967 as part of an industrialisation programme to expand Ghana’s international trade, especially in Africa.
However, the country’s first official International Trade Fair came off on February 1, 1967, which was organised by Lieutenant General J.A. Ankrah, who became the Head of State after the 1966 coup.
A total of 17 foreign countries including 7 African states and 40 Ghanaian industries participated in the fair.
The second and third fairs were organised in 1971 and 1976 respectively.
YEN.co.gh sighted the video after Ghana Facts and History shared the footage on its Twitter handle.
