Chaos broke at Ghana’s biggest hospital, Korle Bu on Wednesday, February 5, 2020, when two foreigners suspected to have the deadly coronavirus reported to the facility.

According to the head of the Public Health Department at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Philip Amoo, the pandemonium was as a result of the lack of a well-resourced holding bay.

He told Accra-based Joy FM that the lack of the holding bay caused chaos among doctors of the facility.

He opined, when the two suspected cases of coronavirus reported at the facility, all the doctors fled.

He told Joy FM that some doctors on duty even began to flee the health facility for fear of getting infected.

Yesterday [Wednesday, February 5] I saw something very funny,” he narrated on Joy FM.

“There is something we call malicious panic: panic that is not founded on anything. Just people [doctors] want to go home…it’s sad. This one will shout, ‘hey I have little children’…and disappear from the scene. That is the reason why as soon as the epidemic thing steps in into the environment, the case needed to be moved away quickly from routine sites,” he explained the actions by the doctors.

Meanwhile, the two persons - Chinese and Argentine have been quarantined and their blood samples have been taken and sent to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) for further analysis.
