He made the donation on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 when the Ghana Rugby team paid a courtesy call on Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House.
The Ghana Rugby Women’s Sevens national team and the Ghana Eagles team presented trophies they won at the 2019 Rugby Africa Women’s Challenge.
Chairman of the Ghana National Rugby, Herbert Mensah, described rugby at the most successful sport discipline in Ghana right now.
He opined that the Ghana National Rugby team is the “most successful sporting team in Ghana over the last four years”.
President Akufo-Addo on his part said, this “means in my period as President, you’ve been the most successful team sports in Ghana. It makes you very special people to me”.
The President has also instructed the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to include rugby into the GES curriculum in basic education.
He also asked the Minister of Youth and Sports to engage the managers of the Rugby Team and the National Sports Authority to work together and allow the Rugby team train at the national sports stadiums as “it is a public facility that belongs to the people of Ghana.”
Perhaps, the most surprising bit of the story is that the passionate supporter has been with a physical impairment which makes it a great chore navigating stadia every time there is a match.
