Pacesetters: Equatorial Guinea donates GHC10.7m to China in fight against coronavirus outbreak

President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has announced that the Central African country will be donating $2m (£1.5m) (GHC 10.7M) to support China in the fight against the spread of coronavirus.

The viral outbreak has killed 636 people so far in China and infected over 20,000 people world wide.

According to President Nguema Mbasogo, the decision to donate to China was taken at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.

He added that it is Equatorial Guinea’s show of “support and solidarity” to one of its allies and trade partners.

Although Equatorial Guinea is Africa’s third-biggest oil producer, more than half the population lives below the poverty line.

Meanwhile, China boasts of the world’s second-biggest economy after the US.

China’s GDP is $13.6 trillion and Equatorial Guinea’s is $13.4 billion.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that five Abuja residents have been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command for falsely claiming to have contracted the coronavirus.

Anjuguri Manza, the spokesperson for the command said the suspects who are alleged pranksters had visited the Wuse District Hospital claiming that one of them had been infected by the Coronavirus, Vanguard reports.
