Amazon pulls out of Mobile World Congress over fears of coronavirus

- Amazon has announced plans to pull out of the upcoming Mobile World Congress scheduled to take place from February 24 to 27, 2020

- The company revealed that it took the decision in the wake of concerns raised about the spread of the coronavirus

Multinational technology company, Amazon, is no longer interested in participating in the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The company’s decision follows concerns raised by the spread of the coronavirus which has claimed lives since it began.

The Mobile World Congress is scheduled to be held between February 24 to 27, 2020, in Barcelona, Spain.

According to Amazon, “due to the outbreak and continued concerns about novel coronavirus, Amazon will withdraw from exhibiting and participating in Mobile World Congress 2020, scheduled for Feb. 24-27 in Barcelona, Spain.”

Per a report by TechCrunch, a spokesperson from Amazon revealed that other companies such as LG, NVIDIA and Ericsson have either canceled or scaled back their plans for the congress.

The organizer of the event, GSMA, has meanwhile issued a statement about precautions being implemented.

These include a ban on visitors from Hubei province, where the epidemic is believed to have begun.

In other news, the coronavirus has, in recent times, caused havoc in a number of countries in the developed world, and the race for a cure appears to be all that everyone looks forward to.

As health officials brace themselves for the worst, Africa is yet to record a single case of infection. Information available shows that over 31,000 people have been infected since late December 2019.

Trips between Africa and China grow by the day, and per a report by Bloomberg.com, closer ties between them has increased the rate of exposure to the virus.

YEN.com.gh understands that about 20 African countries have already discussed the possibilities of an outbreak, taking into consideration the general state of medical facilities.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has meanwhile listed 13 African countries as being at risk of exposure.

As a means of bracing themselves for the worst, some countries have meanwhile instituted measures at detecting and halting the spread of the virus.
