Over thousand people tested positive for HIV in Tema in 2019

The Tema Metropolitan HIV Programme Coordinator, Francisca P. Adzre, has revealed that 1,072 people tested HIV positive in Tema in 2019 alone.

She gave the breakdown of the numbers as follows; 636 females and 436 males.

According to her 817 of the number tested at the Tema General Hospital, 78 at the Manhean Clinic and 74 at the Community One Clinic.

Speaking at the Tema Metropolitan Health Directorate’s performance review, Madam Francisca said 1,072 tested positive out of a total of 12,649 people counseled and tested.

Madam Adzre said 190 out of the HIV positive cases were pregnant women.

She opined that such women will be under the Preventive Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programme which seeks to prevent the transmission of HIV from affected mothers to their foetus.

Available data indicates that there has been a decrease in PMTCT positive figures. 230 recorded in 2018 compared to the 219 documented in 2017.

Giving more details on the PMTCT, she noted that out of a total of 11,768 Antenatal clinic (ANC) registrants in 2019, 11,278 were tested for HIV at the early stage of pregnancy while 11,037 retook the test at 34 weeks of their gestation.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has completed the payments of debt owed Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs).

This was revealed in a statement signed by the Chief Executive Officer of the BDCs, Senyo Hosi. The debts owed by government had accrued between 2011 and 2015.
