Black Stars player becomes first African player to captain Columbus Crew

Black Stars player, Jonathan Maesah has been named the substantive captain of his club side, Columbus Crew SC for the 2020 season.

He takes over from Will Trapp, who captained the club for three seasons. Trapp is moving on to play for Inter Miami.

By the new appointment, Mensah has become the first African-born to captain the Black and Gold.

He is now the first non-American to have the captaincy since Federico Higuain in 2013.

He started his reign with a win as Columbus Crew beat New York City FC 1-0 at home on Sunday, 1 March, 2020.

Jonathan Mensah signed for Columbus Crew in 2017 and has played a leadership role for the club since.

He previously played for AshantiGold, Free State Stars, Granada, Evian and Anzhi Makhachkala.

Jonathan established himself as a starter when he scored his first goal for Ghana in a friendly against Togo on February 8, 2011.

In July 2013, Jonathan launched his eponymous charity foundation, the Jonathan Mensah Foundation.

It was aimed at providing logistical support, donations and funding to under-privileged institutions and orphanages across the country.

In 2017, Jonathan was named the Columbus Crew SC Humanitarian of the Year, both for his work through his charity and his volunteer efforts in the Columbus community.

Azumah's sweat and hard work have not gone waste as he has been rated alongside boxing legends across the globe.

The WBC Hall of Fame Inductee has been rated by Boxrec, a renowned boxing platform known for recording boxers' professional records.
