Exactly 54 years ago, on March 2, 1966, Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Conakry, Guinea after being invited by Sekou Toure just after the military coup that illegally deposed his government.

Nkrumah was in Peking, present-day Beijing en route to Hanoi, with an agenda to end the American war in Vietnam when news of the coup first reached him.

Four African presidents including Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, Modibo Keita of Mali, Sekou Toure, Guinea and from Tanzania, Julius Nyerere sent Nkrumah immediate invitations and messages of support.

Nkrumah accepted Sekou Toure’s invitation on the back that Guinea shared Nkrumah’s Pan-African objectives.

Aside Guinea being closest to Ghana, which would make it easy for Nkrumah to return to carry on his work, he had strong brotherly connections with Sekou Toure.

Kwame Nkrumah arrived in Guinea on March 2, 1966, together with his bodyguards and a few civil servants who had remained with him after he was deposed.

Toure received Nkrumah as Head of state, gave him a 21-gun salute and conferred on him ''the head of state and secretary-general of the Guinean Democratic Party.'',

The title enabled Nkrumah to make a few ceremonial appearances around Conakry and to live in a pleasant villa.

The new Ghana government, the National Liberation Council, accused Guinea of keeping notorious tyrants and criminals in Africa.

Ghana's new government cut ties with Guinea, announced the immediate closure of Ghana’s embassy in conakry and called on the Guinean government to permit the ambassador and staff to leave the country.
