Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide has stated that it is compulsory for former President John Dramani Mahama to attend every national event.

According to Hadzide, the former President in the event of his inability to grace a national event is mandated to explain to Ghanaians, his reasons for not attending.

His comments come after an aide to former President John Mahama, Stan Dogboe, said it was not mandatory for a leader of a political party or a former president to attend each and every event.

Reacting to former President Mahama’s absence, the Deputy Minister for Information on Okay FM said the former President should have written back to the organizing committee of his inability to honor the invitation.

Pius Enam Hadzide said his checks showed that the state did not receive either a confirmation or a cancellation of the invitation.

"I have not seen any explanation as to why former President Mahama did not attend the 63rd Independence Anniversary," he said.

In other news, the Office of former president Jerry John Rawlings has explained that the former head of state was unable to join them because he had to be in Sogakope in the Volta Region to celebrate the day.

According to a report by Ghanaian times, it was to show solidarity following the recent violent attacks, which led to the death of the Assemblymember of the area.

“He joined the people of Sogakope “to express my condolences and sympathies to all that has happened over the last month,” it stated.
