As the world struggles to find a lasting cure and remedy to the deadly COVID-19 illness, authorities have also intensified measures that will help reduce the spread of the disease.

In China, for example, people are avoiding handshakes and resulting to greeting one another with a gong shou gesture, where a palm is folded over the opposite fist.

In the Gulf, citizens are saying "hello" with a wave rather than the traditional “nose to nose” greeting.

And in Italy and France, friends and acquaintances are eschewing the customary peck on both cheeks.

In Ghana, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has introduced a new safe style of greeting instead of the handshake.

On Tuesday, March 10, 2020, when the Veep attended the first edition of the Mobile Technology for Development (MT4D) Conference, he greeted by hitting his elbow against that of his host to the admiration of onlookers.

It is recalled that President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to take their personal hygiene serious and avoid handshakes and also wash hands under ruling water frequently.

The current COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak is a reminder that the handshake is a great way of transferring different microbes like viruses and bacteria from one person to another.

Please note that changing greetings could slow its spread. But handwashing is essential.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that Nadine Dorries, the health minister of the United Kingdom (UK), on Tuesday, March 10, admitted that she has been infected with the coronavirus.

According to BBC, Dorries started showing symptoms of the disease since Thursday, March 5, when she attended a minister at Downing Street with Prime minister Boris Johnson and has been in self-isolation since Friday, March 6.
