Coronavirus: Over 1 million prank calls rock 112 hotline

- Ghana’s coronavirus hotline has recorded a number of prank calls

- The Ministry of Information has said a total of 1,887,125 prank related calls were recorded between a period

- Only 15,801 calls were of real emergency

- The ministry says it would educate Ghanaians more on the issue

The 112 hotline created to help Ghanaians swiftly report suspected cases of coronavirus has been rocked with prank calls, the Ministry of Information has revealed.

In a statement sighted by YEN.com.gh, it has been stated that between January 28 – March 16, 2020, a total of one million, nine hundred and two thousand, nine hundred and twenty-six (1, 902,926) calls were recorded.

Out of this number, only 15, 801 were of real emergency cases while the over 1 million calls were only prank related.

The statement as sighted by Sandra Frimpong, a communication specialist for the minister, says the ministry is not pleased with the development.

It stated further that the ministry will embark on a training and sensitization programme to educate Ghanaians on the issue.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s confirmed coronavirus cases have jumped from 63 to 132 as of Thursday, March 26, 2020.

78 of the cases were confirmed among the Ghanaians who have been placed under mandatory quarantine by the government.

In a related development, President Akufo-Addo has said that the government is weighing options before deciding on a lockdown as a solution to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Also, the national chief Imam has called on the police to arrest and Imam or Muslim who flouts the government’s orders on the ban of public gathering.
