Coronavirus: SA records first death as numbers pass 1000 mark

- The Department of Health has announced the first fatality in the coronavirus outbreak

- In a statement released on Friday morning, Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize confirmed the death

- In addition to this, the number of confirmed cases has risen above the 1000 mark

The Health Ministry has announced that the first South African have died after contracting the coronavirus in a statement released on Friday morning:

"This morning, we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first death resulting from Covid-19. The death occurred in the Western Cape. At a public hospital."

So far, very little information is available on the situation, with Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize commenting:

"We will give you more details later on, when we announce the latest confirmed Covid-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday's number and tipped the 1 000 mark."

YEN.com.gh reported that the number of confirmed cases rose to 927 cases on Thursday on the eve of the 21-day lockdown.

Citizens are called upon to observe the regulations imposed on the public during this time in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.

South Africans are only permitted to leave their homes in order to purchase essential goods and obtain medical assistance.

The South African National Defence Force and the South African Police Service have joined forces to ensure that order reigns during this time.
