Coronavirus: Russian doctor who met President Putin last week tests positive for COVID-19

A doctor who gave Russian President Vladimir Putin a tour of Moscow’s main coronavirus hospital on Tuesday, March 24, has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Dennis Protsenko interacted with Putin when he visited the Kommunarka Hospital.

Neither man was wearing protective equipment during their conversation and they even shook hands according to a report by Bloomberg on Tuesday, March 31.

Protsenko confirmed the incident on his Facebook page.

“Yes, I have tested positive for coronavirus, but I feel pretty good. I’ve isolated myself in my office. I think the immunity I’ve developed this month is doing its job," he said.

Another video shared on Facebook showed the duo walking together side by side in the hospital.

"Dr Dennis Protsenko who gave the tour of COVID-19 hospital in Moscow, to my man Putin, has tested positive for the virus. They both were together and shook hands," a social media user Jahangir Ghafoor said as he shared the video.

On Tuesday March 31, Russia reported a 27% increase in coronavirus infections overnight, bringing the total number of people infected to 2,337.

In his meeting with the tough-talking president, Dr Protsenko said Russia should brace for the spread of the disease as he likened the situation to the one in Italy where over 105,000 cases have been reported with at least 12,000 deaths.

Globally, over 860,000 cases of the pandemic have been registered with 42,000 lives claimed as of Wednesday, April 1.

In Kenya, 59 cases have been reported by the Ministry of Health with one death and two recoveries.
