Doctor who put off retirement to treat COVID-19 patients dies of disease

- A 62-year-old New York doctor who worked for almost 40 years has died of coronavirus after treating patients with the virus

- The doctor identified as James Mahoney delayed his retirement to help patients but got infected in the line of duty

- He was said to have worked tirelessly treating patients till he contracted the deadly disease

James Mahoney, a New York doctor who delayed his retirement to help lead his hospital's response to the coronavirus pandemic, has died after contracting the deadly disease.

According to Fox News, the 62-year-old worked as a pulmonary and critical care physician at University Hospital of Brooklyn during the day and Kings County Hospital Center at night,

YEN.com.gh gathers that the doctor who worked tirelessly to treat coronavirus patients succumbed to the disease on April 27.

His family and colleagues pleaded with him to retire as they were concerned that his age could put him at a higher risk for severe illness, but the physician refused as he could not watch and do nothing.

Purna Atluri, a gastroenterologist who worked with Mahoney for more than two decades, said: “He was handling patients and codes [patients needing intensive intervention] every five to 10 minutes.

“He was doing everything he could."

Neurologist and one of Mahoney’s colleagues, Julien Cavanagh, told The Guardian: “He’s one of our legends — he’s one of our giants."

In other news, Tanzania President John Pombe Magufuli has revealed that his child recovered from COVID-19 after taking lemons and ginger.

Magufuli said the child isolated himself after contracting the virus and self-medicated using the said "remedies" after which he completely recovered.

Speaking in a church service on Sunday, May 17, the president said the child was doing well and even doing push-ups after beating coronavirus.

"My child got coronavirus, my own child that I brought into this world. The child locked himself in the room and treated self-using lemons and ginger," Magufuli said.

"I cannot lie when standing at the altar of God because I respect my God and so do not think that I have not faced this virus," he added.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh earlier reported that just when the Chinese government thought it has seen and dealt with the worst when it comes to coronavirus, a mysterious wave of the disease recently attacked two cities.

According to a report by Express UK on Wednesday, May 20, a second wave of the deadly pandemic has hit two cities in the Asian nation (Jilin and Shulan).
