The news of former general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie's death shocked many Ghanaians.

His death, according to the first gentleman of the land, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also came as a great shock to him.

Akufo-Addo did not mince words in paying a glowing tribute to the late Sir John, as he was affectionately called.

He highlighted how important and dedicated his contributions were to the NPP.

In a post sighted by YEN.com.gh on Akufo-Addo's page, the president stated, "We will never forget you."

"... He was truly unforgettable and our party and government owe him an immense debt for his work and commitment.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that the Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and CEO of the Forestry Commission, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, is dead.

His death has been confirmed by the Director of Communications at the Jubilee House, Eugene Arhin.

Sir John is believed to have tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease otherwise known as the COVID-19, which ended up taking his life.

A source at the Forestry Commission told Citi News he died at the intensive care unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
