Sir John and 3 big men killed by COVID-19

Health experts are still trying to cope and find a vaccine for the virus.

Since the first case of the disease was recorded in China in 2019, thousands across the globe have also been infected by the COVID-19.

So far over 10 million people have contracted the disease globally, with 5.48 million recoveries recorded and over 516 000 deaths.

In Ghana, 18 630 people have tested positive for the virus, with 14 046 clinical recoveries and 117 deaths.

Amongst those who have succumbed to the disease in Ghana are some prominent individuals.

Before we name some of the ‘big men’ in Ghana who have died from the pandemic, it is important to note that the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease.

Some people who fall sick with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms and recover without special treatment.

An infected person can pass on the virus when they cough, sneeze, or exhale. When this happens, anyone in close proximity can easily also contract the disease.

Now, below is a list of 4 ‘big men’ who have died of COVID-19 in Ghana.

1. Former NPP general secretary, Sir John

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as ‘Sir John’, died on Wednesday, 1 July 2020.

He died of COVID-19 while on a ventilator at the intensive care unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

2.The Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi, Anthony Kobina Kurentsi Sam

His death was confirmed by President Akufo-Addo in one of his COVID-19 updates to the nation.

3. Renowned physician, Jacob Plange-Rhule

Renowned physician and rector of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, Professor Jacob Plange-Rhule, is also believed to have died of COVID-19.

He died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on 10 April 2020.

4. Kwadaso SDA Hospital Medical Director, Dr. Boateng

The Medical Superintendent of the Kwadaso SDA Hospital in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region also died of COVID-19.

The Ghana Health Service says blood samples from Dr. Boateng tested positive for the virus.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, has stated categorically he sees no sense in publicising names of COVID-19 infected government officials.

According to him, it was not ethically right to put the name of those infected in the public domain. He made this known while addressing the press on Thursday, 2 July, to update Ghanaians on the country’s COVID-19 case management.
