The presidential and parliamentary elections are just around the corner, and every eligible Ghanaian would love to participate. However, there are various requirements for voters registration Ghana 2020 that one needs to meet to be able to cast their votes. Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) confirmed its decision to create new voters register for the November 7, 2020 elections.
According to the Daily Graphic report, the Deputy Chairman of EC, who is in charge of operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, revealed that the current voters register was bloated; and there was no other effective way of cleaning it up. According to him, a total amount of US$ 70.96 million (GHC390.3 million) would be needed to facilitate the exercise to fruition. Part of the money would be used to purchase new biometric voter management system, biometric voter register kits, and upgrading of the biometric verification device. The voters registration process commenced in April.
Who is eligible to vote?
If you wish to cast your vote in the upcoming voters registration, it is wise that you successfully participate in the Ghana voters ID card registration process. Here are the requirements to meet for you to be eligible;
- Be a citizen of Ghana
- Be 18 years and above
- Be of sound mind
- Be a resident or belong to an electoral area
- Have a valid passport
- Have a National Identification Card
How to register for a voter ID
Here are some easy and simple steps to follow in the voters registration exercise. Keep in mind that the registration exercise will happen in 6,788 clusters, consisting of five registration centres throughout the country.
Fill out a voter registration form
Once you visit a registration centre, the registration officer will hand you a form to fill. You are required to fill all three sections.
Section A of the form
Some of the items in this section include:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Residential address,
- National Identification Card number or Passport number
Section B of the form
Some of the items in this section include:
- Father's full name
- Mother's full name
- Hometown address
- District and region
Section C of the form
This section is reserved for persons living with disability.
Go through the guarantor process
If you fail to produce the two documents to prove your citizenship, you will be advised to go through the guarantor process. This way, they will ascertain your Ghanaian citizenship after you have filled the Voter Registration Identification Guarantee Form. Here are the details you are required to fill for a successful Ghana voters ID card verification process through the guarantors' process;
- State the relationship of the guarantors to you
- State whether the guarantor is your parent, sibling, guardian, or spouse
- The guarantor's contact number
- The guarantor's voter ID number
- The guarantors polling station code, polling station name
- Sign on the form or insert thumbprint
Once you have signed the form, you have given the registration officials permission to investigate your case and decide.
Fill in the Biodata details
Once you have filled in your forms, and the registration officers are content with your filled information, they will go ahead and take your biodata information. This entails the following;

Interestingly, as every Ghanaian goes through the electoral process, the EC will ensure that every person follows the Covid-19 preventive protocols. According to Jean Mensa's statement, there will be about 7,000 health personnel present at the registration centres.
