Early life

Fashion designer Kwaku Bediako was born on May 7, 1986. He attended the University of Ghana Primary School Legon. He then proceeded to Achimota School, and later moved to the University of Ghana and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Archaeology and Information Studies. He is the last born and has four siblings. His mother purchased sewing machines for him and his siblings. True to this, the Kwaku Bediako family has supported him in achieving success in his career.

Interestingly, at the tender age of 11, he was already drawing comics and building characters. At the age of 15, he was drawing buildings, and at 18 years, he was designing cars. At the age of 21, he started writing movie scripts, and when he was 26 years, his love for designing clothes was birthed.

Career

After he completed university, he started an idea company known as Checkmates, a marketing and business ideas oriented company. While working here, he met with Mr. Philip Ayesu, CEO of XMEN Grooming, and it is here that his love for designing clothes sprouted. He did not waste any time and immediately started taking tutorials from various tailors in Africa.

Chocolate clothing was started in March 2013 and became incorporated in 2018. The company was birthed as a result of Ghanaians desire to dress in comfortable and unique African wear. The talented designer has been honoured to dress some of the most respected celebrities in the world. These include Cardi B, Steve Harvey, Kwabena Kwabena, Mr. Eazi, and Idris Elba, to mention a few, in the Year of Return.

The artist gave Cardi B a unisex Agbada jacket during the Meet & Greet session. The fashion designer also manages and oversees the production of custom-made sandals and shoes. He has been featured on various leading notable platforms such as CNN African Voices in 2016, Vogue Magazine in 2017, and BBC radio in 2018.

He told BBC;

Ghanaians have always liked to look good, and I think the question was; was it packaged well? And I believe strongly that now we are just getting it right. Africa is so rich, and now the world sees it.

In July 2020, the designer unveiled a new collection known as Barbees. He revealed the following as an inspiration for the brand;

The inspiration for the new collection came from “doing something that’s for the black man by the black man.
