Parliament has approved a tax waiver of $3.2 million for the procurement of KAPEK scientific math sets for the SHS 3 WASSCE candidates.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) rresolved that the supply of the math sets to students would reduce examination malpractices.

The Chairman of the Finance Committee, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah made this known while laying the report to the House.

In order to successfully import the equipment, there is a need to waive taxes and duties applicable.
It is in this regard that the request for waiver of taxes and duties has been submitted to Parliament for approval in accordance with Article 174 of the 1992 constitution.”

According to the committee, the supply of the maths sets will provide free in-one functionality which comes in cheaper than acquiring them individually.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said government should have considered better value for money analysis before approving the tax waiver.

In other news, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be starting soon.

According to the WAEC, the final year SHS students should be starting their exams on Monday, 20 July, as per a timetable submitted to the Ministry of Education.

Visual arts candidates will commence the exams with their practical project work while the theory papers will start from 3 August and run until 5 September.
