The founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has challenged the credibility of the new voters' register.

According to him, the eligibility of proof that underpinned the recently ended registration undermined the very principle for the government's push to have a new register.

Ayariga added that some people who are not Ghanaian but have the card are vouching for people.

He said:

“I believe that the old register is more credible than the one that we are compiling. I know many people with Ghana passport but they are not Ghanaians. So where is the credibility?"

He added that in many constituencies foreigners and people who are less than 18 years old were being vouched for to get their names on the register.

Hassan Ayariga has, in the past, described the voter registration exercise as something that cannot guarantee a credible voter register for the upcoming general elections.

Meanwhile, former president, John Dramani Mahama, has described the just ended 2020 voters' registration exercise as a successful one.

John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) initially opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile a new register for the 2020 polls.

However, in a Facebook Live interview, the NDC leader opined that the EC’s exercise met the expectations of the party.

He stated that, despite the high turnout, the new register has largely succeeded in taking out the names of dead people that existed in the old register.
