Mahama in ‘trouble’: Group mercilessly blasts him for disrespecting Chief Imam’s office

Former president John Dramani Mahama is facing the wrath of a group, Zongo Movement for Development (ZOMOD) for allegedly disrespecting the Chief Imam, His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

The group in a release noted that the NDC flagbearer disrespect the National Chief Imam when he turned his purported introduction of his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang into a rally in the presence of the Chief Imam at his residence.

They say Mahama's action is a “flagrant display of disrespect towards His Eminence Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu".

John Dramani Mahama and his running mate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang on Wednesday, August 12, 20202 were at the residence of the Chief Imam in Fadama in Accra.

Former president Mahama, under the guise of visiting His Eminence to introduce to him his running mate, Prof. Jane Opoku-Agyemang, ended up with a mini-rally at the residence of the National Chief Imam with organised supporters who were bussed to the place.”

“We find this behaviour by the former president and his team not only disrespectful to the National Chief Imam and his Office but also appalling and unbecoming of one who ought to know better," the group's statement sighted by read.

According to the group, the Chief Imam and his office are apolitical, thus it was wrong for the NDC flagbearer to "deliberately taint the Chief Imam’s status by busing his supporters to the Chief Imam’s residence to enhance his political campaign".

The statement further concluded that the National Chief Imam is a revered cleric, a national icon, a champion of diversity and politically neutral whose presence should be treated with decorum.

The former president’s mini-rally has incurred the wrath of a section of the Muslim community, especially on social media.

Many took to social media on Wednesday afternoon to express anger and disgust.

One of such persons is a Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, Alhaji Huzaiman Osman expressed his disgust on his Facebook page. earlier reported that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama introduced his running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang to the Christian Council on Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

At the event, the former president charged that clergy to take action against what he described as politicization of state institutions by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He noted that the country cannot sit all of as the country “slips towards decadence”.
