Electoral Commission’s office in Accra gutted by fire

Fire gutted the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) located at Sapeiman near Amasaman on Friday, August 14, around 2:30 am.

The fire service got to the scene and took them about four fire tenders from Amasaman, Kotoku, Nsawam and Abelemkpe to douse the fire.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the affected building is used for the storage of old and used items for the Commission.

The Greater Accra Regional Director of Commission, Mr. Kwame Amoah informed the Regional Police Commander DCOP Mr. Afful Boakye Yiadom who was at the scene that the fire will not affect the recent registration and the upcoming December 2020 elections,” the statement added.

The fire was finally brought under control at about 5:00 am.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known. There was no casualty.

Police officers from the Greater Accra Regional Division were at the scene of the fire to provide security for the fire officers.

YEN.com.gh earlier reported that President Nana Akufo-Addo on Thursday, August 13, 2020, commissioned some 75 greenhouses and an entrepreneurship centre at Dawhenya in the Greater Accra region.

According to the President, the project is supposed to boost local vegetable farming in Ghana.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Akufo-Addo said the greenhouse program is a key step in modernizing agriculture in the country.
